CLIENT: BCBSMA
Role: Enterprise Director of UX, UI, and Accessibility | Subject Matter Expert | Team Lead | Project Lead
Launched an Accessibility team of cross-functional partners to define and address known violations. As a result, we built a scalable solution to monitor new and existing digital experiences for our compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA standards. Over 20 people upskilled to build accessibly across app and web. The program catalyzed a philosophy of designing with the end user in mind.
THE CHALLENGE
Non-compliance
Blue Cross MA digital experiences could not meet requirements of Section 508 Accessibility, which was increasing UX debt and liability for the enterprise with little resources skilled.
Limited budget, deprioritized business need
With conflicting top priority projects and mandates to uphold, I saw my UX design team being stretched thinner than ever. Yet it was not feasible to hire in order to close the resource gap.
The results
Compliant websites
Key public and member-facing websites are not Section 508 Compliant via WCAG 2.1 AA Compliance.
Up-skilled team and technology
There is an on-going maintenance plan to ensure continued monitoring and success of every website. With a trained team of accessibility folks dispursed in every discipline, every project moving forward prioritizes Accessibility as a key part of success metrics.

Details include defining accessibility and it’s impacts across the enterprise, training a core team of accessibility experts in their discipline and reporting out to every area of the enterprise, creating the accessibility standard of guidelines to follow that were shareable to all associates, and finally conducting audits on every web experience to ensure issues were catalogued, triaged, and de-bugged.
